Beginning

Students were introduced to the concept of collage by viewing the of several artists, including, including teaching artist, Victoria Martinez. After a discussion of color and texture, students explored manipulating paper to create their own collages, incorporating a variety of color and texture. Later they recorded their feeling about the exercise in their sketchbooks.

Subsequent lessons explored geometric and organic shapes. Students were asked to observe familiar objects in a different way; deconstructing them to find the shapes. The class was then led on a tour of the library and cafeteria, in search of interesting shapes. these were recorded in their sketchbooks. Students later selected their favorite shapes and arranged them to create patterns that would later be used to create their own soft sculpture.

End

Each student transferred shapes that were recorded in sketchbooks onto fabric and attached them to felt squares to create a soft sculpture. The class then arranged the individual collages and sewed them together as one sculpture. Installation artists, Christo and Vik Muniz were introduced with an emphasis on the changes that their artwork underwent when placed out in the environment. The class soft sculpture was then installed in the side courtyard of the school. Students documented any change in the artwork due to nature, weather, etc. Attitudes toward the transformation of the piece were recorded in their sketchbooks.
