The nine values of Jackie Robinson were key in Ms. Mixon’s fifth grade language arts class. The novel “42” chronicles the life of Jackie Robinson as he struggled to break the color barrier in major league baseball. As they read the story, they looked for evidence of courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice commitment and excellence.
Fifth graders learned the printmaking process and created a collection of nine baseball cards, each with a symbol representing a value. “Baseball stats” were written in language arts class, explaining each value on the card and citing where in the story the value was exhibited. These stats were placed on the back of each card.
