Perez Elementary School

Year 2 - Grade 4

Beginning

Student #1

This is an example of a listening exercise. They listened to “Don Quixote” by Richard Strauss, while drawing a picture of what they though was happening in the story.

Student #2

We created masks as part of our “creating a character” lesson.

They wrote a description of their character, and what their character would say and then created a mask of that character. Then we improvised musical sounds that would reflect our character.

Student #3

This is an example of writing for our mythical musical. The students each started a myth in the first section, and created a plot for our musical. Then they passed the story to another student to continue in the second column. The paper was passed a third time and then returned to the original owner. This required the students to read, write and create parts of the story. It was very interesting to see the twist and turns the stories took, and the students enjoyed getting their paper back and seeing how their story turned out!

Middle

Student #1

This student finished notation the verse with rhythms and started creating notes for those rhythms before moving to the chorus. This is completely acceptable, and we encourage each student to do what works best for them as a young composer. We play the students songs when they ask during class so they can hear how the melody is shaping up and allow them to change things if they like. We look forward to hearing this song when it is finished!

Student #2

Here is a student who has finished the rhythmic notation of their song and is just starting on the musical notation portion.

Student #3

Each student wrote song lyrics, and we pieced together two final songs with a verse and chorus. Then the students added rhythms to the words. Here is an example of the next step where they added pitches to the song.

How Singing Started

The culmination of all the lessons throughout the year produced a musical show. Here is video clip of the final show at the Fine Arts Festival at Perez School on Wed. May 22nd.

The students performed the entire show. The 4th grade wrote the musical “How singing started.” It was a myth of how singing started and never stopped. The students performed the musical that they wrote with confidence and excitement, even though they were nervous. The video isn’t the best quality, but it give an idea of the presentation and displays the work they put into this project.

Student #2

Reflecting on the whole year can be a very challenging thing for any age. The 4th grade class each received a blank yellow poster, and a handout with activities we’ve done over the last few months. We asked them to write and draw about one of the elements we worked on while we build the show. Here is the handout and the beginning of a students reflection.

Student #3

As a reward for the students hard work, we thew them a pizza party while we watched the video from their performance! Positive reinforcement for the great job they did will encourage them to work even harder next time. The party also allowed them to talk with their friends about the performance and give them some ideas for reflecting. Also, having a party as the last class will boost moral and allow them to remember the positive parts of writing and performing a show.
