This student is adding rhythms to lyrics created by the class. By adding one note for every syllable of a word it allows the student to integrate reading and speaking with musical elements.
Here is a song with the rhythms finished. Next they'll transfer these rhythms to notes on the treble clef, and we'll have a finished song! This is a good example of using one note per syllable. You can see on the first line (and other spots) where the student erased some notes when they checked their work.
Here is a great example of a finished song. The rests are very interesting rhythmically and the melody is varied and imaginative! We modeled for the students, did examples with their suggestions, and then they had the chance to work independently. This shows that they really understood the exercise.
