The kids ended up with some fantastic themes to accompany their character pictures (which were created with their Talcott art teacher, Ms. Sally) and a better understanding of how music sets the mood in film and storytelling. At times, the students seemed frustrated by the lack of clear directives; how exactly to create a story? to compose a song that illustrates a story? Those were the challenges we wanted them to overcome, and they spent several class periods using Garage Band to bring life to their character narratives. In the future, I think we could spend more time on pieces such as Peter and the Wolf, which we did listen to in class, to better establish the idea of narrative in programmatic music. Their short themes certainly set a mood!
