Year 1 - Grade 4


In Ms. Jackson’s 4th grade classroom, the students were asked to list words describing the various events in the story “The Stranger”.

In the general music class, Ms. Wyatt and Saalik Ziyad (teaching artist) asked the students write down words that came to mind after they watched a film scene.  The scene was set in a barren desert.  The camera then takes the viewer through an ancient pyramid and finally settles on an ancient sarcophagus.  The students watched the same scene three times.  The scene stayed the same but the soundtrack changed.



Students continued to practice and view movie scenes and write down inferences. Students also learned about different ways of creating sound using traditional notation patterns and studying the different sounds of orchestra instruments.  They created their own sound patterns using quarter, 8th, 16th, and barred 16th and 8th notes.

Students created a soundtrack in their classroom with Ms. Jackson and the teaching artist.  The students and teaching artist listed the key words from each scene of “The Stranger” and practiced creating the sounds as the story was read by Saalik.  Saalik then created a final video of this performance.  The students enjoyed this project very much.  They said that it helped them to remember the essential details of the story.

Journal entry student #2:  "I learned that sounds can make words easier.  Sounds make the word what it is.  I learned enough about drab and timid to teach someone.  I know that my great aunt has a lot of drab clothes and is timid to new people so those words are easy.  I still have questions about hermit. How do I make sounds for hermit?"
